Oil & mixed media on canvas, 2006
The inspiration behind this work was Durga, (the powerful Indian goddess) and her herald, the tiger. Typical depictions of this deity usually involve an overt display of aggression and power with her holding weapons in her eight arms slaying a demon with the help of her feline counterpart. However, this painting conveys a more silent strength through spirituality with the tiger forming the mythical 'third eye' on Durga's forehead. It is my belief that this goddess emanates from the earth so I have used 'earthy' colors to reflect this thought. The purpose of drawing African patterns over the entire piece was to highlight my background being a fusion of two cultures Indian with African.
