Gaia (Mother Earth)
Oil on canvas, 2006
The idea of the female figure holding many attributes, such as the 'femme fatale,' fascinated me and I chose to portray this idea through Gaia. She encompasses and represents the animal kingdom and Nature itself (hence Mother Nature) and is shown here in an enigmatic pose being guarded by a panther on the dunes of a desert. African patterning, in particular, was a point of interest at the time as I was exploring ways to incorporate a part of myself into the work and experiment with the placement of patterns to describe form.
