Oil on canvas, 2006
Following the same subject matter as Shakti, which is based on the mythological goddess Durga and her herald, the tiger. The thought process for this piece however was entirely different as it demonstrates the deity's darker side unlike the former painting. In order to convey this idea I have depicted the tiger coming out of the darkness into the light. Some underlying similarities with Shakti are present, such as the belief that Durga comes from Mother Earth, which is expressed in this piece through the boulders in the fore-front. Another similarity is in the choice of using the herald instead the goddess herself. Indications of the deity's presence are given through the trees, which are abstract representations of her form and her name written subtly in Hindi as the syllables Du, Ra, and Ga. Each of which holds a significance to the redeeming qualities she possesses.
